“Bombs Away” follows the story of a WW2 B-17 bomber pilot, Herbert Small, from his humble upbringing in rural Western Massachusetts to Army Air Force training and finally into combat in the skies over Europe.
Herbert was a pilot with the 544th Bomb Squadron, 384th Bombardment Group (Heavy) flying our of RAF Grafton Underwood.
Herbert was great-uncle to the author Hans Smith, who set out on a mission of his own to research his family members’ background and service history.
A captivating read giving an insight into the daily demands of operating a heavy bomber during WW2, and also of the life and times of a young American, far from home, living and working at Grafton Underwood.
Please note – the Author kindly donates a portion of the proceeds for each book sold through the 384th BG Museum back into the Museum project.
